The Many Faces of Adult Acne
Acne is a symptom that causes much distress for sufferers and can impact quality of life as frustration, embarrassment, anxiety and even depression can set in when struggling with the onset of adult acne. It can come as a surprise when in our teen years our skin may have been clear (or reasonably clear) but then appeared in force in late teens or 20’s, possibly even later. Often our hormones are blamed as ‘flares’ may occur around menstrual cycles. However a deeper understanding of acne can demonstrate that the acne is a response to deeper imbalances at the gut level.
Oestrogen - Friend or Foe
On many occasions in naturopathic clinic I see much confusion with regards to female hormones, with oestrogen being blamed for all woes. At this point I usually wind back the discussion and go through the typical monthly hormonal cycle for the menstruating female. Often it is a light bulb moment as the connection between the rises and falls of the hormones can now be associated with symptoms - moods, pain, spotting etc.
Supplementing Nutrients - B6
Recent media attention and questions from clients has led me down a path to assess vitamin B6 and ensure confidence in my clinic prescriptions. I don’t take it lightly when I prescribe nutraceuticals as part of your treatment.
So, in this article I answer the following key questions: What is Vitamin B6? What is Vitamin B6's role in our physiology? What is the gamut of recommended dosages? Why might you need higher levels than the RDI? What are the toxicities that are likely to occur, and why?
PMS & PMDD
The luteal phase is the 2 weeks before your menstrual bleed. It is this time of the month that can cause the most discomfort and unsettling symptoms. Premenstrual Disorders (PMD) are reported to occur to some level in 70-80% of menstruating women.
The interplay of hormones, neurotransmitters, genetics, lefstyle, and diet are some factors that may influence your symptoms experienced before your menstrual cycle.
